How UAE E-Invoicing Works: The Five-Corner Model

Updated 2026-10-13 · by Brandew · اقرأ بالعربية

UAE e-invoicing is not a PDF sent by email. It is structured invoice data exchanged between accredited service providers over the Peppol network, with tax data reported to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) as part of the same flow.

The five corners

  1. Corner 1, the supplier: your ERP, accounting software or business system creates the invoice and sends the data to your ASP.
  2. Corner 2, the supplier's ASP: validates the data, converts it to the UAE XML format if needed, sends it to the buyer's ASP and reports the tax data to the FTA.
  3. Corner 3, the buyer's ASP: validates the invoice, confirms receipt to Corner 2, delivers it to the buyer and reports the tax data to the FTA.
  4. Corner 4, the buyer: receives the e-invoice into its own system.
  5. Corner 5, the FTA: receives the tax data and confirms successful reporting to both ASPs, which pass the confirmation on to the supplier and the buyer.

Every business connects to the network only through its ASP, and each business appoints one ASP for both sending and receiving.

The invoice format: PINT AE in XML

E-invoices are issued, transmitted and received in XML, following the Peppol PINT AE specification for the UAE. The Ministry of Finance publishes the mandatory fields. E-invoices do not carry a QR code. If a buyer has not implemented e-invoicing yet, a regular tax invoice (for example a PDF) is still required in addition to the electronic one.

Addressing: participant identifiers

Each business on the network has a participant identifier made of the scheme code 0235 followed by its 10-digit Tax Identification Number (TIN), which is the first 10 digits of its 15-digit Tax Registration Number. The supplier is responsible for collecting the buyer's identifier. Special identifiers exist for buyers without one, for deemed supplies and for exports.

Credit notes, self-billing and failures

Record keeping

The business remains responsible for keeping its e-invoices even if the ASP stores them. For taxable persons the retention period is generally five years after the end of the relevant tax period, with longer periods in specific cases such as audits and real estate records.

What this means for your systems

Your systems sit at Corner 1, and Corner 4 when you receive invoices. They need complete invoice and customer data, the ability to send invoice data to your ASP through an API or file exchange, and a way to track statuses such as accepted, rejected and reported. Custom websites, booking platforms and in-house tools that issue invoices usually need the most work. Brandew builds and adapts these integrations; see our UAE e-invoicing integration service.
